Indian Premier League Season 2 is heating up.

Chennai Super Kings registered their 4th win yesterday, 3rd in a row out of their 8 league matches so far, in an eventful match.

Eventful indeed, as we witnessed some copybook cricket shots by M Vijay, much expected unconventional shots by MS Dhoni, accurate bowling at the depth by RP Singh, dream opening bowling spell by Albie Morkel and Sudeep Tyagi, catches dropped in pairs, hurricane innings from Dwayne Smith capitalizing his drop chances to good effect, good slow bowling by Jakati to cover his fumble as he missed simple runout chance twice in same ball and Murli showing his experience chipping in with couple of wickets.
What more one can expect in this short form of cricket!!??

MS Dhoni was lucky enough to win the toss and elected to bat first on a good flat pitch, which turned out to be a good decision.

Chennai Super Kings innings was opened by M Vijay and Matthew Hayden. They provided a good start to the innings putting on 61Runs for the first wicket in 6.5 overs. Inform and consitent Hayden scored quick fire 43Runs(26 Balls). M Vijay played some classical shots to get his 31(33). MS Dhoni, the Captain of Chennai Super Kings, came in at number 2 promoting himself up the order. He playing responsibly while watching Suresh Raina hitting all around the park. At the strategic break score was 84/1 and it looked like Chennai Super Kings might reach 200 easily. But some good bowling by RP Singh at the depth restricted them to 178/3.

Deccan Chargers started their innings with 179 runs required to win at a run rate of 8.95/over. Expectations were much on Gilchrist and Gibbs to provide a bliztering start. Albie Morkel started the bowling attack for Chennai Super Kings and bowled a beauty first up to knock Gilly out for not. On the other end Tyagi cleaned up Gibbs for not and Morkel got the wicket of Laxman caught in the short midwicket playing his favorite shot. A dream start for Chennai Super Kings and a disastrous one for Deccan Chargers with 3 wickets down for just 1 run that came of a Wide ball. Dwayne Smith was the next man to the crease and his intentions were clear to hit every ball. He skied couple of deliveries, one landed safely guarded by 3 fielders around and other dropped by fielder in the deep. Smith went on to score 49 in just 22 balls before getting out lbw to a good delivery from Jakati. Smith’s cameo includes 5 hits over the boundary. Rohit Sharma played some good shots and was caught in deep midwicket by Badrinath of the bowling of Jakati. The lower order of Deccan Chargers couldn’t do much and they were all out for 100 runs in under 15overs.

Jakati again picked up 4wickets and Murali bagged 2 more to his total. MS Dhoni was named man of the match for his good innings for 58 from just 37balls. Chennai Super Kings got home safely with 78run victory over Deccan Chargers, the leaders of the point table for the first two weeks. With this win Chennai Super Kings moved to the top of the points table with 9 Points and a strong run rate of +1.36 which might turn out to be crucial at the end.

Importance of Run rate:

With 6 losses Kolkata Knight Riders are nearly out of the contest, unless they come back with win in all their remaining games. All other teams are very close to each other in points making the run rate very crucial.

At this stage, its really unpredictable as who’s going to move on to the semi finals. Deccan Chargers and Delhi Dare Devils were on the top after first 4 matches but lost their way after that. “This unpredictability is the key for the success of the remaining matches” says Lalit Modi, Chariman, DLF IPL and rightly so.

As a fan of Chennai Super Kings and resident of Chennai, I’m hoping that Chennai Super Kings could continue their winning streak and win the IPL Seas0n 2.
